WORTH A DETOUR
BURNABY
Immediately east of Vancouver via Hastings St, Burnaby - the birthplace of Mi-
chael J Fox, no less - is a no-frills residential suburb with an elongated strip-mall
feel. Luckily, there are a handful of attractions to keep you away from the shops.

Nestled among Burnaby's labyrinth of residential side streets, tranquil Deer
Lake Park ( dawn-dusk) is crisscrossed with verdant meadow and waterfront
walks, and also offers boat rentals. Nearby, the popular Burnaby Village Museum
( www.burnabyvillagemuseum.ca ; 6501 Deer Lake Ave; 11am-4:30pm May-Aug) F recreates
the atmosphere of a British Columbia (BC) pioneer town, with replica homes and
businesses of the time and a wonderfully restored 1912 carousel. Entry to the mu-
seum is half-price on Tuesdays and it's also open off-season for special Christ-
mas and Halloween displays.
Topping Burnaby Mountain, Simon Fraser University ( www.sfu.com ; 8888 University Dr)
is the Lower Mainland's second main campus community. Visitor attractions here
include the Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology (
10am-4pm Mon-Fri) F and the
SFU Gallery ( 10am-4pm Tue-Fri, noon-5pm Sat) F .
Burnaby is a 20-minute SkyTrain hop from downtown Vancouver - alight at
Metrotown Station for bus connections throughout Burnaby.
