of the machinery remains - polished and cleaned of its film of blood and oil - and
there's an evocative focus on the people who worked here before the plant's 1979 clos-
ure.
You'll hear recorded testimonies from former workers present in the air like ghosts
and see large black-and-white blow-ups of some of the staff who spent their days im-
mersed in entrails in order to roll thousands of cans down the production line. Take one
of the free hourly tours, sometimes run by former cannery workers.
SUMMER NIGHT MARKET
MARKET

( www.summernightmarket.com ; 12631 Vulcan Way, Richmond; 7pm-1am Fri & Sat, to midnight
Sun mid-May-early Oct; 407) Much larger than downtown Vancouver's Chinatown ver-
sion, this market lures thousands of hungry locals on summer weekends. Check out the
tacky vendor stands and, more importantly, the dozens of hawker food stalls. Make sure
you come hungry so you can taste-trip through steaming Malaysian, Korean, Japanese
and Chinese treats. Be sure to compare it with the Richmond Night Market, the region's
other summer-season night market.
The adventurous grub to look out for here includes stinky tofu (the blue cheese of the
Asian dining world), and dragon's-beard candy - a sweet, whispy treat that's unlike
anything else we've tried.
RICHMOND NIGHT MARKET
MARKET

( www.richmondnightmarket.com ; 8351 River Rd, Richmond; admission $2; 7pm-midnight Fri &
Sat, 6pm-11pm Sun mid-May-mid-Oct; Bridgeport) The city's original Summer Night
Market closed a few years back after losing its venue, but reopened in a new spot in
2012. In the meantime, this new market opened in its former spot. The locals have been
happily confused ever since, but it's a good idea to try both markets if you love scoffing
from steaming food stands.
Of the two markets, this one is easiest to reach on transit. It offers the usual mix of
cheap, blingy trinkets, live entertainment and - the main lure - many chances to stuff
your face.
