This country-style French bistro has a warm, casual atmosphere and a delectable menu.
Locally sourced produce is de rigueur, so the dishes constantly change to reflect sea-
sonal highlights such as figs, salmonberries and heirloom tomatoes. We recommend the
beef paleron in a bacon and mushroom sauce. There's also an excellent French-focused
wine menu, plus some tasty (mostly Belgian) beers.
SPINNAKERS GASTRO BREWPUB PUB
( www.spinnakers.com ; 308 Catherine St; 11am-10:30pm) This wood-floored brewpub is a
short miniferry hop from the Inner Harbour but it's worth it for the copper-colored Nut
Brown Ale and the smashing Hoptoria American-style IPA. Save room to eat: the
gourmet-yet-comfort grub menu includes hearty pizzas and locally made sausages, and
an ale-braised beef dish that'll fill you up for the week.
Beer fans should ask about the daily special cask - a different one is tapped every
night.

( www.canoebrewpub.com ; 450 Swift St; 11:30am-11pm Sun-Wed, to midnight Thu, to 1pm Fri &
Sat) A pioneer of the Victoria brewpub scene, this cavernous brick-lined bar is popular
on rainy days but it also has the best patio in the city, with handsome views over the
waterfront. Indulge in treats that are brewed on-site: the tasting sample is recommen-
ded, but make sure it includes crisp Red Canoe Lager and the lovely, copper-colored
Siren's Song Pale Ale.
Food is hearty pub grub here, so you'll find plenty of ways to soak up all the booze.
Be sure to ask about the seasonal beers.
