SHOPPING
Outdoor stores are a specialty here, particularly those that can help you
hit the bike trails or gear-up for an assault on area ski slopes. But it's not
all about action.
LONSDALE QUAY PUBLIC MARKET MARKET
OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP
( www.lonsdalequay.com ; 123 Carrie Cates Ct, North Vancouver; 9am-7pm; SeaBus from
Waterfront Station) As well as being a transportation hub - the SeaBus from downtown
docks here and you can pick up transit buses to Capilano, Grouse and beyond - this wa-
terfront facility houses a colorful public market. Look for fresh fruit and glassy-eyed
whole fish on the main floor, and trinkets and clothing on the 2nd floor. There's also a
lively food court (Montgomery's Fish & Chips recommended).
It's an easy afternoon jaunt from downtown, with many visitors scooping up an ice
cream and lingering over the boardwalk views of Vancouver. If you're eating at the
food court (in summer), snag one of the alfresco tables.
MOUNTAIN EQUIPMENT CO-OP OUTDOOR EQUIPMENT
OFFLINE MAP
( www.mec.ca ; 212 Brooksbank Ave, North Vancouver; 10am-9pm Mon-Fri, 9am-6pm Sat,
11am-5pm Sun) Smaller than its Vancouver parent, this MEC branch has a friendlier,
more neighborly feel. Almost everyone here - staff and customers - seems to know
each other and is a member of the North Shore outdoor community. It's a great place to
stock up on gear for your nature-loving adventures; you'll find everything from perfect
soft hikers to great waterproofs.
You'll need to be a member to purchase from this nonprofit co-op: it's easy to ar-
range and costs just $5 (for life).
