store - reputedly Canada's biggest kids' bookshop - has thousands of novels, picture
books, history titles and anything else you can think of to keep your sprogs quiet. There
are also regular readings by visiting authors and a selection of quality toys and games if
they need a break from all that strenuous page-turning.
Along with the usual classics and vampire-themed young adult novels, there's a cool
array of First Nations books to flick through.

of travel accessories on the other, this store has been inspiring itchy feet for years.
While the topics selection is among Vancouver's best, it's the gadgets that are most in-
triguing. Peruse the money belts and mosquito nets, then wonder how you ever got by
without quick-drying underwear.
The staff of seasoned travelers is super-knowledgeable if you just want to talk up
your next big adventure. This is a good spot to pick up that plug adapter you mistakenly
left at home.
THOMAS HAAS FOOD

( www.thomashaas.com ; 2539 W Broadway; 8am-5:30pm Tue-Sat; 9) This independent
chocolatier is often bursting with locals purchasing their regular supplies of gourmet
treats, such as caramel pecan squares and chili-suffused bon-bons. But the stars of the
glass cabinet are the choc-encased fruit jellies (raspberry ganache recommended). A
good spot for Vancouver-made souvenirs like chunky chai and espresso chocolate bars.
And since you're buying treats for everyone back home, you deserve one yourself: a
huge slab of 'dark bark' chocolate brittle topped with nuts and dried fruit should do the
trick. There are also a few tables (although they're often fully occupied) if you want to
stop for a hot chocolate and a pastry treat.
