BARD ON THE BEACH
PERFORMING ARTS
( 604-739-0559;

; Vanier Park; Jun-Sep; 22)
Watching
Shakespeare performed while the sun sets against the mountains beyond the tented
stage is a Vancouver summertime highlight. There are usually three Bard plays, plus
one Bard-related work (
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead,
for example) to
choose from during the run. Q&A talks are staged after Tuesday-night performances,
along with regular opera, fireworks and wine-tasting nights throughout the season.
Expect Christopher Gaze - the festival's effervescent artistic director and public fig-
urehead (and popular local actor) - to hop up on stage to introduce the show. He's the
kind of old-school actor-manager that Shakespeare himself would have recognized.

Depending on the night, the calendar runs from mainstream to edgier fare. Keep in
mind that, on top of your ticket charge, there's a minimum $10 food/drink charge ($15

there's no cover and beer specials all night.
