Books). They kept the old name and the same approach: stacks of new books (best-
sellers included) at discounted prices.
You'll find good selections of fiction and travel guides here. It is also a great spot to
pick-up tomes covering local history (if your baggage limits allows go for The Chuck
Davis History of Metropolitan Vancouver ) at the best price in the city.

While some private galleries can look intimidating from the outside (perhaps pur-
posely), this newer entry in the city's one-time gallery-row area is the opposite. The
storefront of windows help, enabling you to view many of the works without going in.
But step inside and check out the rest. Bold, often bright contemporary works dominate
with Canadian artists the main focus.
There's usually an intriguing mix of styles and approaches on display, including
large paintings, smaller-scale photography (Vancouver is renowned for its contempor-
ary photoconceptualism) and a plinth or two of ceramics or sculpted figures.

of the long-established galleries responsible for the city's artistic renaissance in recent
years, Bau-xi - pronounced 'bo-she' - showcases the best in local artists and generally
has prices to match its exalted position. The main gallery selection changes monthly
and the focus is usually on original paintings - although prints, drawings and sculpture
are also added to the mix on occasion.
Look out for works by favored Vancouver contemporary painters like Jack Shadbolt,
one of Canada's most collectible modern artists.
