( www.cineplex.com ; 3440 Cambie St; 15) Last holdout of a popular Vancouver independ-
ent movie theater chain, the Park succumbed to a takeover by the big boys in 2013. So
far, little has changed at this one-screen charmer (except the missing homebaked cook-
ies) and this is a still a great, never-packed spot to catch a flick with the locals. Art-
house and blockbusters are still part of the mix.
Keep in mind that they only screen one film per week (and frequently that film can
be here for a few weeks at a time). Despite the age of the theater, everything is well
maintained and the screening equipment is state-of-the-art: there are often 3D movies
shown here. Be sure to check out the cool deco-esque neon sign on top of the building.
KINO CAFE CABARET

( www.kinocafe.ca ; 3456 Cambie St; 15) Vancouver's only flamenco cafe, this popular
haunt is a great place to chill on a summer evening. If it's really warm, bask in the sun
with a beer at a table outside. But be sure to trip back in when the show starts: there's
live dancing on the little wooden stage from Wednesday to Sunday, with world music
on Monday and live comedy on Tuesday.
Whether or not you think you like flamenco, it's hard not to be caught up in the en-
ergy of the performances and you'll likely be tapping your own toes on the hardwood
floor within minutes. Order some tapas for your table to keep everyone in the mood
(the Spanish meatballs are recommended). If you're here on Friday and Saturday, ex-
pect a crowd: this room can really buzz on weekends.
YUK YUK'S COMEDY CLUB
COMEDY

( www.yukyuks.com ; 2837 Cambie St; Thu-Sat; Broadway-City Hall) Although there are
other comedy nights in bars and theaters around the city, Yuk Yuk's is one of Van-
couver's only dedicated stand-up venues. Check ahead to see what's on: amateur nights
are the best deal but there's also a roster of journeyman comedians rolling in from
across Canada and the US. A small, windowless venue, it can feel a bit crowded on
busy nights.
Don't be put off by the unassuming exterior, which resembles the stage door at the
back of a regular theater. Food-wise: stick to the drinks.
