to 75km/hour. It's usually a good idea to go on it before indulging in the final big
attraction.
This is the one time of year when Vancouverites forget about their yoga-and-
rice-cakes regimen, happily loosening their pants and stuffing themselves silly.
The midway here is jam-packed with treats from giant barbecued turkey legs to
two-foot-long hotdogs . Deep-fried everything is also a recent trend (from Oreo
cookies to ice-cream) while older culinary traditions still lure: you'll see plenty of
older visitors munching on scones from one of the Tudoresque stands, while just
about everyone else will be sticking their hands into warm paper bags of min-
idonuts , fresh-fried at several family-run stands around the site.
Don't spend all your money on food, though, because you'll need some for the

( www.wisehall.ca ; 1882 Adanac St; varies; 20) This comfortably grungy former church
hall is a friendly neighborhood spot that's close to the heart of in-the-know locals who
flock here to catch live ska, salsa, improv shows and the occasional hip-hop DJ night.
Check the schedule for events or just hang out in the lounge (ask the bartender to sign
you in as a guest).
It's a great place to mix with cool East Vancouverites; the bouncy floor here brings
out the mosh-pit desires in the most reluctant of dancers. Regular monthly events in-
clude the quirky Taboo Revue burlesque show and the Eastside Flea , a community
market of vintage togs and artisan bits and bobs.

Sat, 10am-1am Sun; 20) This glowing, brick and art-lined long room is a cozy, loun-
gelike spot for a relaxing, chatty dinner over a martini or three. Even better is the roster
of nightly live music - typically of the smooth jazz variety - when two hopping house
bands hit the stage (not at the same time, luckily) to deliver a mellow, toe-tapping side
dish.
