GRANVILLE ISLAND'S BEST FEST
It might feel like an invasion but it's probably more accurate to call the 11-day
Vancouver International Fringe Festival ( www.vancouverfringe.com ) an energetic oc-
cupation of Granville Island. Running every September, the event includes a mul-
titude of enthusiastic performers from Canada and around the world staging ap-
proximately 800 shows - from comedy reviews to poignant dramas - at venues
large and small. Naturally the island's surfeit of theaters is well utilized, but shows
are also frequently staged in less conventional venues, from floating miniferries
to pop-up stages on every street corner. Tickets hover around the $10 mark but
deals are plentiful and free shows are common. Book ahead for shows before you
arrive, but note that just strolling the island during the event can be entertaining,
as buskers and flyposting performers try to catch your attention. Finally, consider
hanging out with the performers themselves: usually one bar is set aside during
the festival for the thesps to chill out with audience members between shows -
it's the perfect opportunity for you to dust off that searing reinterpretation of
Death of a Salesmanyou've written and that just needs a producer (and a lyricist
for the musical numbers).
