CANADA'S HERO: TERRY FOX
The most poignant gallery at the BC Sports Hall of Fame & Museum is dedicated
to national legend Terry Fox, the young cancer sufferer whose one-legged 1980
Marathon of Hope run across Canada ended after 143 days and 5373km, when
the disease spread to the Port Coquitlam resident's lungs. When Fox died the fol-
lowing year, the funeral was screened live across the country and the government
ordered flags to be flown at half-mast. A memorial was later constructed outside
BC Place Stadium but it was replaced in 2011 by a new and much more impress-
ive one created by Vancouver artist and writer Douglas Coupland, who had
already penned his own celebrated book, Terry, in tribute to Fox. The new statue
is a series of running figures showing Fox in motion during his cross-country
odyssey. When Fox started his run, he received very little attention, but by the
time he was forced to stop it felt like the entire country was behind him. Every
year since his death, fundraising runs have been held across Canada and around
the world to remember his bravery. The Terry Fox Foundation
( www.terryfox.org ) estimates that these have now raised more than $500 million
for cancer research.

really lucky, you'll get a small-batch seasonal made right here on the island.
You'll spot many GIB brews in bars and restaurants around the city. You can also
buy some takeout in the adjoining store - small-batch faves including Irish Red, Imper-
ial IPA and Cloak & Dagger Cascadian Dark Ale are recommended.
