In-Depth Information
It's often jam-packed on weekends; arrive early or come during the week to snag a
seat.
PAT'S PUB LIVE MUSIC
OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP
( www.patspub.ca ; 403 E Hastings St; 11am-midnight Sun-Thu, to 1am Fri & Sat; 14) Saved
from gentrification annihilation by its grungy location, Pat's Pub started a century ago
and has recently dusted off the jazz chops that saw Jelly Roll Morton play here back in
the day. Saturday afternoon sees no-cover jazz shows from 3pm, while there are open
mikes and other events throughout the month. The good-value beer menu includes
house-brewed Pat's Classic Lager.
The food is a cut above typical pub f are - pulled pork sandwiches and yam fries, for
example - and almost everything on the menu is under $10. Spot the beer tanks through
the glass panel. Feel free to blow them a kiss.
FORTUNE SOUND CLUB
DANCE
OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP
( www.fortunesoundclub.com ; 147 E Pender St; Wed-Sat; 3) The city's best club has
transformed a tired Chinatown spot into a slick space with the kind of genuine staff and
younger, hipster-cool crowd rarely seen in Vancouver venues. Slide inside and you'll
find a giant dance floor popping with party-loving locals just out for a good time. Ex-
pect weekend queues, and check out Happy Ending Fridays, when you'll possibly
dance your ass off.
Reputedly home to one of the city's best sound systems, Fortune also hosts a roster
of regular bands.
ELECTRIC OWL BAR, DANCE
OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP
( www.electricowl.ca ; 926 Main St; from 7pm; 3) A nightlife social club for neighbor-
hood cool kids, this brick-lined bar-resto-club combo always has something going on.
The roster of happenings ranges from regular live acts to Tuesday-night eclectic
karaoke. If you need to get your ping-pong on, head downstairs for Monday's table-ten-
nis showdown. When you need to fill up, you'll find Asian-inspired tapas (go for the
naughty poutine with teriyaki gravy).
Ask about the local beers on offer: there's usually something crafty and original
available alongside the more generic factory stuff.
