This cave-like subterranean bar, tucked under Gastown's brick-cobbled sidewalks,
has a cult following among the kind of under-30s crowd that love sipping Anchor
Steam and playing Jenga at their tables (one of the many games available for imbibers
to play). Avoid weekends when there are often lineups and the place is crammed - drop
by on a chilled-out weekday instead.
Along with the beer, there's an array of inventive cocktails to keep things lively.
Check ahead for live music of the singer-songwriter variety, too.

At Gastown's coziest tavern you
can cover all the necessary food groups via the extensive, mostly bottled, beer menu.
There's a small, animated summer patio out front but inside is great for hiding in a
chatty, candlelit corner and working your way through the brews - plus a shared small
plate or three (sausage platter recommended).
Along with trying one of the dozens of bottled ales, it seems right and proper to also
have a whiskey here: that's 'Gassy' Jack's statue outside, perched atop a barrel, and he
started the city with his first bar just a few steps from where you are now. If you fre-
quent the upstairs bathrooms during your visit, be prepared for an unexpected audio
soundtrack, which can range from 1930s Dixieland jazz to German-language record-
ings.
