In-Depth Information
St and you'll soon arrive at Maple Tree Sq. This is where 'Gassy' Jack triggered
the city by building his first saloon - tip your hat at the statue ( Click here ) of
him here, then duck underground to Guilt & Co for a bottled beer and a board
game. Back outside, nip across the square to Six Acres , one of the area's co-
ziest hangouts. You'll be tempted to stick around, but the spirit of Gassy will be
calling you back to the streets.
Stroll across Carrall St and duck into the Irish Heather . The best spot in
town for a Guinness, it also has a hidden whiskey bar out back where you can in-
dulge your love of some of the top spirits from Ireland, Scotland and beyond. If
you're still walking by this stage, head back onto Carrall, walk north for a few
seconds and turn right onto Powell St. The street sign will point you to the unas-
suming stairwell that leads to the lovely Diamond , a great spot to find Van-
couver's best cocktails. You'll likely still be able to spot Gassy's statue through the
window, smiling at you across the square. If he's also talking, you've probably had
too much to drink.
But if not, head back out and take Alexander St eastwards. Within a couple of
minutes you'll be at the Alibi Room ( Click here ) . This is the city's favorite
craft-beer bar and the best place in Vancouver to end your evening with a beery
flourish.
