from hot sandwich specials served with soup or salad to a heaping roast with all the ex-
tras. The sausage and roast potatoes dish is the winner, though - complete with local-

gather up the makings of a fine picnic; a popular weekend brunch service; and a new

( www.meatandbread.ca ; 370 Cambie St; mains $7-9; 11am-5pm Mon-Sat; 14) Arrive early
to avoid the lunchtime queue at Vancouver's favorite gourmet sandwich shop and you
might even snag one of the four tiny window perches. If not, you can hang with the hip
locals at the chatty long table, tucking into the daily-changing special, which usually
features slices of perfectly roasted local lamb, pork or chicken. The grilled cheese
sarnie is ace, too.
Wash it all down with a $6 craft beer, and expect to come back: this place has an al-
most cult-like following. The daily special is announced on Meat & Bread's Twitter
feed, so you'll know what's coming your way.

ing. Locals drop in to admire each other's MacBooks over lingering flat-white coffees
and indulge in the kind of wholesome treats that might be made by a gourmet grandma.
Start the day with poached eggs on house-baked bread, and return for the ploughman's
lunch served on a board.
Grab a perch at the long table and you'll soon be in with the locals, or drop by for the
Seagull's twice-weekly evening yoga classes - just $25 gets you a stretch and an organ-
ic dinner. Check the walls for locally created artworks, and take a peek at the open kit-
chen at the back: if you're here when the bread's being baked, you'll be in culinary
heaven.
