Peer in the windows and also notice the glass panels in the sidewalk, reminders of
a subterranean public steam bath complex that once served area locals.
Turn right onto Carrall St. The entrance to the lovely, landscaped Dr Sun
Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden ( Click here ) will soon be on your left. Inside
the garden, check out tranquil pools, intriguing limestone formations and gnarly
pine trees on a guided tour. When you exit, walk north towards Pender St noticing
the bronze memorial on the red tiles that commemorates the contribution of
Chinese workers to building Canada's train system, and then the white-paneled
alternative Chinatown gate that was built for Expo '86.
Turn right onto Pender and stroll east for a couple of blocks. You'll pass rows of
antique Chinatown buildings and several dragon-topped street lamps; you're now
entering the heart of Chinatown. Time for a snack? Nip into New Town
Bakery ( Click here ) for a takeout barbecued pork bun. Continue east on Pender,
then cross over Main St. Explore the traditional Chinese grocery and apothecary
stores that radiate a block or two east of Main, especially on Keefer St. Return to
Main and walk south to Union St.
Turn left onto Union to find the Jimi Hendrix Shrine ( Click here ) , reputedly
on the site where Hendrix' grandmother used to work. Her grandson is said to
have played in several area bars before he hit the big time.
