In-Depth Information
( www.vancouverchinatownnightmarket.com ; Keefer St, btwn Columbia & Main Sts; 6-11pm Fri-
Sun mid-May-early Sep; Stadium-Chinatown) Recently reinvented to compete with the
success of larger night markets in Richmond, Chinatown's version is well worth a sum-
mer evening visit. Cheap and cheerful trinkets feature but the highlight here is the food
- it's like a walk-through buffet of fish balls, bubble tea and tornado potatoes. Check
ahead: there's an eclectic roster of live entertainment including alfresco movie screen-
ings.
Expect ping-pong tournaments and hip-hop karaoke at the market's Columbia St,
where Saturday nights are also reserved for food-truck meet-ups: several of the city's
fave trucks roll in for the evening.
JIMI HENDRIX SHRINE NOTABLE BUILDING

(207 Union St; 1-6pm Mon-Sat Jun-Sep; 3) F Said to occupy the building that
formerly housed Vie's Chicken and Steak House - the 1960s restaurant where Hendrix'
grandmother cooked and the young guitarist frequently strummed - this spot is worth a
quick look. A quirky, homemade attraction, the red-painted shack is lined with old pho-
tos and album covers and is staffed by a chatty volunteer or two.
Whether or not this is the real Vie's Chicken building has been hotly contested, but it
was certainly around this area. And it's one of the last reminders of a neighborhood
called Hogan's Alley that was Vancouver's black district for many years. You're not ex-
pected to pray at the shrine, but this is a good spot to indulge in some surreptitious air-
guitar.
