( 604-665-3346; www.vancouverpolicemuseum.ca ; 240 E Cordova St; adult/child $12/8;
9am-5pm Tue-Sat; 4) Illuminating the crime-and-vice-addled history of the region, this
quirky museum is lined with confiscated weapons and counterfeit currency. It also has a
former mortuary room where the walls are studded with preserved slivers of human tis-
sue - spot the bullet-damaged brain slices. Consider a summertime Sins of the City
walking tour to learn all about the area's old brothels and opium dens.
If you're really enthused, the museum also runs Forensics for Adults workshops;
check ahead for schedules. One of Vancouver's hidden gem museums, it has plenty of
exhibits and grainy photos covering a time when the city was rougher than a 1950s X-
rated film noir movie.
STEAM CLOCK LANDMARK

(cnr Water & Cambie Sts; Waterfront) Halfway along Water St, this oddly popular tourist
magnet lures the cameras with its tooting steam whistle. Built in 1977, the clock's
mechanism is actually driven by electricity; only the pipes on top are fueled by steam
(reveal it to the patiently waiting tourists and you might cause a riot). It sounds every
15 minutes, and marks each hour with little whistling symphonies.
Once you have the required photo, spend time exploring the rest of cobbled Water St.
One of Vancouver's most historic thoroughfares, its well-preserved heritage buildings
contain shops, galleries and resto-bars. Be sure to cast your gaze above entrance level
for cool architectural features.
