In-Depth Information
( www.vancouverfanclub.ca ; 1050 Granville St; 10) The newest Granville Strip live venue is
also the most chilled. Attracting a crowd that would rather sip a nice bourbon than dive
into a mosh pit, the acts are often of the smoky blues, roots or jazz variety. The space
has a cool New Orleans-style feel to it with high-ceilings and a hardwood floor. There
are acts every night and cover typically ranges up to $15.
If you're on a budget, drop by on Saturday afternoons at 2pm when there's a cover-
free jazz-rock-blues showcase.

( www.thecomedymix.com ; 1015 Burrard St, Century Plaza Hotel; shows 8:30pm Tue-Thu,
8:30pm & 10:30pm Fri & Sat; 2) It may be hidden in the basement of the Century Plaza
Hotel, but this is arguably the city's best comedy venue; head here for some raucous
belly laughs. Bigger acts strut their stuff here on weekends when it's typically packed,
but consider early in the week for a more chilled-out visit: Tuesday's ProAm Night in-
cludes a plethora of newbies trying to make you laugh without wetting themselves.
There's tapas-style nosh available from the bar, as well as heartier dinner packages.
MALKIN BOWL PERFORMING ARTS
( www.malkinbowl.com ; Stanley Park; 19) Formerly just a summertime venue for music-
als, this smashing Stanley Park stage has become an increasingly popular spot for al-
fresco live music. Elvis Costello, Franz Ferdinand and the Flaming Lips have had audi-
ences (and those skulking around the fences outside) jumping up to punch the air here,
often while partaking of a naughty BC cigarette or two.
Check the website for this year's Concerts in the Park menu and book ahead.
THEATRE UNDER THE STARS PERFORMING ARTS
( 604-734-1917; www.tuts.ca ; Malkin Bowl, Stanley Park; tickets from $29; Jul & Aug; 19)
The old-school Malkin Bowl is an atmospheric open-air venue in which to catch a sum-
mertime show. The season never gets too serious, usually featuring two enthusiastically
performed Broadway musicals, but it's hard to beat the location, especially as the sun
fades over the trees peeking from behind the stage. Increasingly the venue is also being
used for live-music gigs.
This beloved local summertime fixture is a great way to meet the locals: many of
them have been coming here for decades.
