In-Depth Information
Turn left on Barclay St and stroll through the residential heart of Van-
couver's vibrant gay community. There are some smashing old heritage apart-
ment buildings and wooden Arts and Crafts homes here.
Continue until you reach the well-preserved plaza of historic houses at
Barclay Heritage Square , a reminder of how Vancouverites of yesteryear lived.
Duck into what is perhaps the best-preserved of the bunch: lovely, antique-lined
Roedde House Museum ( Click here ) (even better if you time your visit for
Sunday's afternoon tea).
Head southwest along Nicola St and you'll come across the lovely brick-built
1907 Firehall No 6 . It's still in use but has the feel (and look) of a museum.
There's often a shiny firetruck basking in the sun outside.
Continue on and turn right into Davie St , a teeming area lined with shops
and cafes that's also the commercial hub of the gay community. It's a popular
place at night as it has plenty of bars and clubs. If you need a coffee break,
Melriches ( Click here ) is nearby.
When you reach the end of Davie St at English Bay Beach ( Click here ) ,
turn left and stroll along Beach Ave. This becomes the main promenade for
Sunset Beach , where you can sit on a grassy bank and watch the locals jog and
rollerblade by, or you can catch a miniferry to Granville Island just across the wa-
ter.
