The wine list has some good BC bottles; here's your chance to dive into a tipple or
two from popular regional wineries such as Quails' Gate and Burrowing Owl.
FISH HOUSE IN STANLEY PARK SEAFOOD $$$
( 877-681-7275, 604-681-7275; www.fishhousestanleypark.com ; 8901 Stanley Park Dr; mains
$22-42; 11:30am-10pm Mon-Fri, 11am-10pm Sat & Sun; 19) The park's fanciest dine-
out, this double-patioed joint serves some of the city's best seafood. The menu changes
based on seasonality but typical favorites include salmon Wellington and smoked cod
linguine, while fresh oysters are ever-popular with visiting shuckers. Weekend brunch
is a highlight - try the smoked salmon Benedict. Fish House's commitment to serving
sustainable seafood extends also to locally sourced beef, duck and chicken.
If you've room for more, come back for a rich treat-focused afternoon tea (served
from 2pm to 4pm). Then run around the park four times to work it off.
VANCOUVER'S MOST BEAUTIFUL BRIDGE
The Lions Gate Bridge gets all the kudos and much of the postcard space, but
that's arguably due to being bookended by Stanley Park and the looming moun-
tains. For many, the huge green bridge itself is not nearly as picturesque as the
Burrard Bridge that spans False Creek. Built to link downtown to Kitsilano and
crammed with art deco flourishes - torch-like lamps at either end and a jutting
ship's-prow motif signifying the region's seafaring heritage - the yellow-painted
lovely was opened in 1932. But the inauguration wasn't just a simple ribbon-cut-
ting affair. Instead, a Royal Canadian Airforce seaplane was flown under the
bridge deck to kick things off in a rather nail-biting fashion. Perhaps there'll be an
attempt to recreate the festive spectacle for the centenary in a few years time. Or
perhaps not.
