FOOD TRUCK FRENZY
Keen to emulate the legendary street-food scenes of Portland and Austin, Van-
couver jumped on the kitchen-equipped bandwagon in 2011, launching a pilot
scheme with 17 food carts. Things took off quickly and by mid-2013 there were
114 trucks dotted around the city, serving everything from halibut tacos to Korean
sliders, pulled-pork sandwiches to French stews. While there are a number of ex-
perimental fusion trucks, several have quickly risen to the top: look out for local
favorites TacoFino, Re-Up BBQ, Roaming Dragon, Feastro, Fresh Local Wild, Yolk's
Breakfast, Pig on the Street and Vij's Railway Express. And don't miss JapaDog,
which arguably kicked off the scene with nori-and-miso-flavored hotdogs.
There are usually a few vendors around the Art Gallery complex; downtown ar-
teries such as Howe, Burrard, Georgia and Seymour are also good bets.
For up-to-the-minute listings, opening hours and locations for street-food
carts, go to www.streetfoodapp.com/vancouver . And keep your eyes peeled for
special appearances by the carts at events around the city. If you want some ex-
tra help, Vancouver Foodie Tours ( Click here ) offers a tasty Street Eats Tour.

Arrive off-peak at this tiny hole-in-the-wall to snag a seat at the turquoise-colored
counter. Listening to the grassroots Mexican soundtrack and the kitchen staff chatting
in Spanish is the perfect accompaniment to a few superbly prepared soft tacos: go for
the four-part combo and choose from fillings such as grilled fish, pork cheeks and
house-marinated beef, made with top-notch, locally sourced ingredients.
Vegetarians also have some tasty choices such as the veggie combo (cheaper than the
meat combo) and quesadillas. Save room for a glass of cinnamon-flavored horchata (a
milkshake-style traditional beverage).
