Before you arrive, check online for details on the latest exhibition: the biggest shows of
the year here are typically in summer, and it's often a good idea to arrive early or late in
the day to avoid the crush, especially at the beginning or end of an exhibition's run. But
the VAG isn't just about blockbusters. If you have time, explore this landmark gallery's
other offerings. Start on the top floor, where British Columbia's most famous painter is
showcased. Emily Carr (1871-1945) is celebrated for her swirling, nature-inspired
paintings of regional landscapes and First Nations culture. Watercolors were her main
approach, and the gallery has a large collection of her works, which it presents in differ-
ent configurations during one or two exhibitions every year.
The city's more recent contribution to art is conceptual and postconceptual photo-
graphy - usually referred to jointly as photoconceptualism. As you work your way
around the gallery, you'll likely spot more than a few examples of works by the Van-
couver School, a group of local photo artists from the 1980s onwards who have
