ignored by critical and art-historical fashion, has begun to be
looked at as an important episode in the history of the post-war
avant-garde. Many of those whose artistic practice involves digital
networks have acknowledged the importance of these movements
for their work. On the World Wide Web there are many sites dedi-
cated to Fluxus, Johnson and Mail Art, which continues to thrive in
electronic form as an art practice particularly suited to the Internet.

Other avant-garde movements of the post-war era reflected on
different aspects of the burgeoning informational culture. A partic-
ular concern with the nature of information, and the possibilities
for its manipulation was to be found in French post-war practice
