idea that the most effective way to produce good, effective software
is by making the original code available to anybody to add to, edit
and distribute. The most famous examples include the Linux oper-
ating system and the Mozilla code for Netscape. The idea of open
source has been extended to cover a far wider range of activities,
beyond computer software and, through groups such as the
Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) movement, is increas-
ingly being applied to issues of social organization, intellectual prop-
erty rights and so on. A good example of the application of open
source ideas to areas beyond computing is the Creative Commons
not-for-profit organization that encourages and facilitates the
licensing of creative work in ways that others can develop without
breaking copyright law.
