over, under, or around impressive, felled trees, but they only add to the trail's wood-
land feel.
When you're in the woods here, it's hard to imagine that the marble halls of Washington,
DC, are only 20 miles away.
When you return to the beginning of the loop, take the path back down to the
visitor center and explore the rest of the park. Don't miss the nearby Great Falls over-
look, which provides stunning views of the waterfall that separates the upper from the
lower Potomac River. Pick up a trail map at the ranger station to find directions to the
overlook.
DIRECTIONS
From the Washington, DC's beltway-Interstate 495-take exit 41 (Car-
derock/Great Falls) to follow the Clara Barton Parkway. At the stop sign at the
end of the road, turn left onto Macarthur Blvd. Go 3.5 miles to the end of the
road at the park. Entry is $5 per car, and there is ample parking.
