In-Depth Information
The life cycle (from egg to larva to adult) takes only eight
days at 23°C. The nematode can feed on fungi, and can
survive in soil from one year to the next. A. besseyi is also
found in the seedheads of some grasses including elastic
grass ( Eragrostis tenuifolia ) and green panic ( Panicum
maximum var. trichoglume ). Strawberries planted in soil
containing infested grass seeds can be affected by crimp.
Runner Schemes. However, yellow-edge disease,
caused by a combination of other viruses with
mild yellow edge virus , was formerly common and caused
stunted plants with small, pale yellow-fringed leaves. The
continued widespread use of approved runners and the
limited distribution of wild strawberry hosts have resulted
in an extremely low incidence of virus diseases in the crop.
Importance
Crimp disease is rarely seen in Australia.
