In Taipei call the taxi hotline at 0800-055 850 (wait for the message and press 2; on a mo-
bile phone call 55850). Call 02-2799 7997 for English drivers. In Kaohsiung call 0800-087
778 or 07-315 6666. If you have safety concerns call for a cab as all calls are recorded
and saved for one month.
WITHIN LARGE CITIES
Taxis are everywhere. In Taipei a ride will cost you NT$70 for the first 1.25 km and then
NT$5 for every 250 meters. From 11pm to 6am fares are surcharged at an additional
NT$20. Surcharges may also apply for things such as luggage and reserving a cab (as
opposed to hailing one). Two days prior to the Chinese New Year's Eve until the end of
the holidays, the nighttime rate applies to all rides plus an extra NT$20. For nighttime
travelling during Chinese New Year holidays, there is an extra NT$40 charge.
OUTSIDE LARGE CITIES
Drivers will either use meters or ask for a flat rate (the smaller the town the more likely the
latter). Taxis are not that abundant, so it's a good idea to get your hotel to call first, and
then to keep the driver's number for subsequent rides.
