Air
Airlines in Taiwan
Because of the High Speed Rail (HSR) there are very few domestic flights except to the
outer islands and east coast cities.
Daily Air Corporation ( 07-801 4711; www.dailyair.com.tw ) Mostly flies to outer is-
lands from Kaohsiung (to Penghu) or Taitung (to Green Island and Lanyu).
Mandarin Airlines ( 02-2717 1230; www.mandarin-airlines.com ) Flies to Hualien,
Kaohsiung, Kinmen, Penghu, Taichung, Taipei and Taitung.
TransAsia Airways ( 02-2972 4599; www.tna.com.tw ) Flies to Taipei, Taichung, Huali-
en, Penghu, Kaohsiung and Kinmen.
Uni Air ( 07-801 0189; www.uniair.com.tw ) Flies to Chiayi, Kaohsiung, Kinmen,
Penghu, Matsu, Taichung, Tainan, Taipei and Taitung.
Bicycle
Bicycle rentals are common in tourist areas. Bikes can be shipped by regular train one
day in advance, and can be carried with you in a bag on the high-speed trains and all
slow local trains. You'll have no problems bringing bicycles into the country. See the
Taiwan Outdoors chapter for more information.
Boat
There are regular predictable ferry routes to Penghu, Lanyu and Green Island (and
between Lanyu and Green Island as well) in summer, and to Little Liuchiu Island year-
round. Sailings to Green Island, Lanyu and Matsu are subject to weather conditions,
however. Expect cancellations in bad weather and winter schedules to change frequently.
In the summer of 2013, ferry service began from Suao to Hualien, but it was uncertain if
it would continue.
Bus
Buses are generally safe, reliable and cheap, and comfortable for a Western-sized frame.
Some companies offer very large, cosy airplane-style reclining seats. Reservations are
advisable on weekends and holidays.
