In-Depth Information
a water cell where the most disobedient prisoners were kept during high tides and
left to the mercy of the elements.
The notorious Swallows Cave (Yànzi Dòng) , 500m northeast of the park, is a natural
sea cave where inmates rehearsed plays and which also served as an execution
ground and a mortuary. Before you reach the cave, pay attention to the overgrown
graveyard set by the cliff to your right. There were 12 groups of inmates in Oasis
Villa ( Click here ) and those who died in prison with no one to collect their bodies
were collectively buried here, hence they were poignantly known as the 13th Squad-
ron (Shísān zhōngduì) . About 40 gravestones remain but the actual number of burials
is still unknown.
Eating
Nanliao Village has quite a few seafood restaurants and a few awful attempts at Western
food. Most shops are only open for lunch and dinner, so don't wait to eat. There are a
couple of breakfast-only places on the main street and two convenience stores selling the
usual drinks, sandwiches and noodle concoctions.
Local dishes include sea mushrooms ( hǎi xiānggū ) and garlic octopus ( suàn xiāng
zhāngyú ).
