scalding, artfully shaped artificial privacy grottos and a good number of massage
showers (overhead pipes jetting down spring water at jackhammer frequencies).
If you want to visit the beachside pools at night, take a torch with you.
Hiking
The two main trails on Green Island, imaginatively called the Across Mountain Ancient
Trail ( Guòshān Gǔdào ) and the Across Mountain Trail ( Guòshān Bùdào ), both begin within
a few hundred metres of each other on the mountain road to Huoshao (281m), the highest
peak on the island.
You can't climb Huoshao because of the military base at the summit, but these two
trails heading down to the seashore more than make up for that.
Both trails are about 1.8km long and run through thick, natural tropical forest. Paths
are wide and clear, and have informative signs that explain the common English names
of plants. Best of all, the chances of spotting sika deer or the tiny barking deer are high.
Tours
Green Island Adventures TOUR
( www.greenislandadventures.com ) Green Island Adventures arranges year-round transport to
the island, accommodation, and tailor-built tour packages including snorkelling, diving,
hiking and hot springing. It also arranges the use of a glass-bottomed boat for tours
around the island's fabulous coral reefs.
Sleeping
The greatest concentration of accommodation is on the main street in Nanliao Village
close to the harbour, but these tend to be older hotels. Newer and more modern B&Bs
have recently opened up around the island. Almost all hotels and guesthouses on the is-
land offer free pick-ups from the airport and the ferry terminal, as do packages that in-
clude round-trip ferry tickets and scooter rental.
Green Island is a popular summer destination for Taiwanese tourists, which means that
most hotels will be booked solid on weekends. During the low season (or even weekdays
in summer) most hotels offer discounted prices.
