In-Depth Information
» Tao men fish at night and so often sleep or hang about in the daytime. Sugges-
tions that they have an easy or lazy life because they never seem very busy are not
appreciated.
» Tao graves are often not marked, so don't go wandering off the trails in the forest
as you might inadvertently step on one. In general, keep to the roads and paths.
This applies to bird- and butterfly-watchers, too. If you want to explore, get a guide.
» If you are curious about Tao culture it's best to ask your homestay or the associ-
ation to find someone who is willing to answer your questions. Local people don't
always appreciate a lot of direct questions from strangers and may just make up
their answers.
Shopping
One of the most important Tao cultural traditions is the building of elaborately carved
wooden canoes, made from 27 individual pieces of wood, ingeniously held together
without nails. Buying a canoe is unfeasible unless you intend to row it home (not advis-
able).
