In-Depth Information
is the oldest bit of basalt on Penghu but is most famous for the footprint of Lu Tungbin,
one of China's Eight Immortals, impressed on a rock here.
Chimei
Chimei (Qīměi) means 'Seven Beauties' and refers to a legend involving seven women
who, in the Ming dynasty, threw themselves into a well rather than lose their chastity to
Japanese pirates. The island's coastline is one of the finest on Penghu and it's well worth
your time to explore the cliffs and coves.
The Two Hearts Stone Weir ( Shuāng Xīn Shí Hù ), a ring of stones literally shaped like
two hearts, is a Penghu icon and probably the most photographed sight on the islands.
The original purpose of the weir was to catch fish during low tide.
There are several excellent snorkelling spots in the shallow coves around Chimei, and
one-day tours (NT$1100 to NT$1300, including transport and food) can be arranged be-
forehand by your hotel or homestay.
Nanhu Harbour has several seafood restaurants and a couple of homestays. Should you
want to spend the night on Chimei, Thera Inn (Xīlā Xiǎosù; 0972-727 103;
www.thera.com.tw ; 11 Nanhuqitou, Nangang Village, 11-1; r from NT$1900) is recommended. It's
just a five-minute scooter ride from the harbour on County Road 42. The new camp-
ground (Wěilǐwān Lùyíngqū) in Yueli Bay (Wěilǐ Wān) is free and has shower facilities.
Chipei
With its lovely sand-shell beaches, Chipei (Jíbèi) buzzes with tourists in summer but
shuts down almost completely in winter. Chipei Sand Tail ( Jíbèi Shāwěi ) is the most popu-
lar beach on the island and the only one that isn't trashed with garbage. This long strip of
golden sand juts out into the water, its size changing with the coming and going of the
tides. During summer, windsurfing, boating and even parasailing and karaoke singing are
popular activities here. Equipment is available for rent at the beach resort or in the small
shops around the beach. During winter you'll have the whole place to yourself.
Chipei Village has an assortment of homestays and small hotels but most people just
come over for the day.
Tongpan
The shoreline of this small island is barricaded by walls of natural basalt columns, giving
it an imposing appearance. Boats to Chimei will slow down to let you observe the
