(Èrkǎn Mínsù; 998 4406; www.erkan-homestay.com ; d NT$2400; ) This block of old res-
idences in the charming Erkan Village gives you a glimpse of rural life in Penghu
without compromising modern comforts. The rooms, part of a larger family complex, are
at the end of the village. Head towards the temple, turn left, then make a quick right, be-
fore bending your way around a knoll.

There is no formal menu here as the owner churns out dishes from the day's freshest
catch and what is available in his own organic farm. For a NT$200 tàocān (set meal) you
get six tapas-size seafood dishes and one soup.
The restaurant is just a 10-minute drive from Erkan Village on Hsiyu Island.

Outer Islands
The two largest of Penghu's outer islands are Wang'an and Chimei. Both are south of the
main island and have boat and air service to Makung. The third largest is Chipei, north of
Paisha, which has some great beaches. Tongpan is a small island ringed with some fant-
astic basalt column cliffs. Several of the smaller islands encircling the archipelago are re-
serves for migratory waterfowl.
Wang'an
About 30 minutes by boat from Makung harbour, Wang'an (Wàng'ān) is home to the
Green Turtle Tourist Conservation Centre (Lùxīguī Guānguāng Bǎoyù Zhōngxīn;
8.30am-5pm) . Inside are bilingual exhibits about the state of sea turtles in Taiwan
and around the world. There's also information on wildlife preservation efforts in the
Strait Islands and Taiwan proper.
The protected areas for the turtles are on the southwest side of the island. However,
green turtles are extremely rare and even during the breeding and hatching season (May
to October) you are very unlikely to see one. But the beaches here are golden and can be
swum during the day (after 8pm all activity is prohibited).
The Jhungshe Old Dwellings ( Zhōngshè Gǔ Cuò ) are a group of abandoned but well-
preserved houses in Jhungshe Village ( Zhōngshè Cūn ). Nearby is the highest point on the
island, Tientai Mountain ( Tiāntái Shān ), which is actually a grassy hill. Tientai Mountain
