(Shānshǔi Shātān)
Southeast of Makung the excellent Shanshui Beach has white sand and
breaking waves. On weekends the beach is fairly crowded, but during the week you may
have the beach to yourself. The beach is popular with Penghu's surf set when the waves
are up.
Chihli Beach

Up the coast from Shanshui to the northwest, Chihli Beach is a great little
spot with a real community feel. The shell-sand beach stretches for over 1km and is pop-
ular with beach-sports enthusiasts and sunbathers.
This stretch of coast is also known for its bizarre rock formations, created thousands of
years ago by cooling basalt magma. Sea erosion has created many unusual gullies and
crevices.
Fengkuei Cave
(
Fēng Guìdòng
), on Penghu's southwest shore, is a sea-eroded
gully that reportedly makes a peculiar sound when the strong wind rushes through it.
Aimen Beach

Aimen Beach is a favourite among locals for all kinds of water sports and
beach activities. The nearby expanse of pines in
Lintou Park
(
Líntóu Gōngyuán
) borders a
white-sand beach that's superb as a picnic spot but not so suitable for swimming as the
coral is very sharp.
Nei'an Beach

Tranquil and less touristy, white-sand Nei'an Beach is a great place to
watch the sunset.
Windsurfing
With wave and wind conditions similar to Gran Canaria's Pozo Izquierdo, or the
Columbia River Gorge in USA, Penghu is fast becoming Asia's premier spot for wind-
surfing - in winter! From September to April the same Arctic-Mongolian cold fronts that
send temperatures falling in Taipei also blast strong winds down the Taiwan Strait. Wind
speeds around Penghu can reach 50 knots.
In 2010 the Asian RSX championships were held in October for the first time. Organ-
isers are hoping that the archipelago can become a serious training ground for Asia's
Olympic windsurfing athletes.
