looks like a whale. Visiting it gives you a fine excuse to ride over the Trans-Ocean
Bridge, of which Penghu folks are quite proud.
Hsiaomen Geology Museum MUSEUM
(Xiǎomén Dìzhì Bówùguǎn; 11-12 Xiaomen Village; 8am-5pm) Not far away from
Whale Cave is the Hsiaomen Geology Museum, a good introduction to the stuff that
makes up the archipelago.
Dutch Fort SCENIC AREA
(Fēngguìwěi Hóngmáochéng Yízhǐ) The ruins of the Dutch Fort, abandoned when the Dutch
were driven out of Penghu by the Ming army in 1624, are at the end of the peninsula.
There's nothing left of the fort to see, but the grassy terraces offer some fine walks and
even finer views. To get to the fort, follow the signs to Snakehead Hill ( Shétóu Shān ).
Sokang Pagodas TAOIST
(Soǔgǎng Zǐwǔ Bǎotǎ) On the way to Shanshui Beach on County Road 25 are the Sokang
Pagodas, two venerated stone towers. Blessed by a Taoist priest, they are reputed to con-
tain supernatural powers that ward off evil and protect residents from natural disasters.
The towers are about two blocks from each other. From the north-facing tower just
keep heading down the main road and look for the south-facing tower to the left down a
side road.
Penghu Aquarium AQUARIUM
(Pénghú Shǔizú Guǎn; 58 Chitou Village; admission NT$200; 8am-5pm) The two-storey mar-
ine exhibition centre provides information on all the aquatic creatures swimming around
Penghu. Kids and adults alike will have a great time communing with the sea turtles. The
highlight of the aquarium is the 14m glass tunnel allowing visitors and fish to meet eye
to eye.
East & West Fortresses FORT
(Dōngtái Gǔbǎo Hé Xitái Gǔ Bǎo; admission each NT$30; 8am-5.30pm) Both fortresses were
built in 1887 following the end of the Sino-French War. Five thousand soldiers were once
