TOP OF CHAPTER
Matsu's Outer Islands
Northeast of Beigan,
Dongyin
(
Dōngyǐn
) is the largest of the three outer islands and gen-
erally regarded to be the most beautiful section of the archipelago. Dongyin's landscape
consists of steep cliffs, grassy hills and wave-eroded coastline. The main town of the
same name is where you'll find hotels and restaurants.
Dongyin's most famous landmark is the
Dongyung Lighthouse
(
Dōngyǒng Dēngtǎ
). The
lighthouse was built by the British in 1904 and remains an important part of Taiwan's
coastal defence system. Birdwatchers shouldn't miss the steep
Andong Tunnel
(
Āndōng
kēngdào)
from the 1970s; black-tailed gulls breed here during summer.
