Kaohsiung Harbour HARBOUR
MAP
(Gǎngkǒu; Yanchengpu or Sizihwan) Down by Pier 12 (which is also called the Love Pier,
Gushan Ferry Pier and Fisherman's Wharf MAP GOOGLE MAP (Gāoxióng Gǎng Yúrén
Mǎtóu;) you'll find walkways, bike paths, cafes and beer gardens. Check at the train sta-
tion visitor centre about harbour cruises.

British Consulate Residence at Takou (Dagou) HISTORIC SITE
MAP GOOGLE MAP
(Dǎgǒu Yīnguó Lǐngshì Guǎn; 20 Linhai Rd; admission NT$30; 9am-midnight) Built in 1865,
this handsome red-brick consulate residence sits 70m above the mouth of Kaohsiung
Harbour, a perfect location for watching giant container ships sail through the tiny mouth
of the harbour. There's also an interesting clash of cultures to observe here as Chinese
tourists react in bewilderment to the open presence of Falun Gong posters decrying the
Beijing government.
While in the area, check out a tiny temple to the left of the larger temple beside the
consulate. It's the only shrine in Taiwan to deify 17th-century Dutch naval commanders,
much in the way old Chinese generals have been deified over the centuries.
The consulate is a five-minute walk from Sizihwan Beach.
Cijin Island SCENIC AREA
MAP
(Qíjīn) This thin island acts as a buffer to the harbour and extends down the city coastline.
It's a popular day trip from the mainland, with its frenetic seafood street (Hǎichǎn Jiē),
beach, lighthouse (Qíjīn Dēngtǎ; admission free;
9am-4.30pm) and biking routes being
the main attractions.
You can rent bikes on Cijin or take your bike over on the ferry (NT$15, 10 minutes),
which runs from 5am to 2am between the Gushan Ferry Terminal (map) (Gǔshān Mǎtóu)
and the Cijin Ferry Terminal (map).
The beach on Cijin Island is just a five-minute walk from the Cijin Ferry Terminal.
When going in the water, be aware that there are serious rip tides along the more-open
parts of the beach.
