TOP OF CHAPTER
Cingjing
Between Wushe and Hehuanshan, Cingjing (Qīngjìng; www.cingjing.gov.tw ) was once a cattle
ranch of the Seediq; it wasn't until the 1960s that this place was turned into farmland,
providing livelihood to KMT veterans from the Chinese Civil War. Today, Cingjing cov-
ers more than 700 hectares of rolling meadow, and is a hill station especially popular
with Taiwanese, Singaporean and Chinese visitors.
Most visitors come here for the Evergreen Grasslands (Qīngqīng Cǎoyuán; admission
NT$200; 8am-7pm) , an agricultural attraction which offers sheep and dog shows and a
farm experience (lamb feeding) for city slickers. It's located near the Km10 mark.
Small Swiss Garden (Xiǎo Ruìshì Huāyuán; admission NT$120; 8am-7pm) is a well-
maintained garden, with an evening water-themed show in the summer months. It's loc-
ated right opposite Cingjing Veterans Farm Guest House, the landmark hotel of the area.
There are six walking trails in Cingjing that meander through tea plantations and fruit
orchards and offer splendid views of the mountains of Hehuan and Nenggao. Each walk
takes between 40 and 60 minutes to complete.
If Cingjing is on your itinerary, try to visit during the week to avoid the huge weekend
crowds.
Sleeping & Eating
Homestays have sprouted up in Cingjing but avoid the roadside ones: they're noisy at
night when trucks trundle back and forth along the highway.
Cingjing has the highest concentration of restaurants and cafes along Hwy 14. Baiyi
cuisine from Yunnan, China, is a speciality here, thanks to the KMT veterans and their
aboriginal wives from Yunnan who settled and brought their home cuisine here. Most
homestays also serve meals.
