History
Chiayi is the capital of Chiayi County and was once the home of plains aborigines, but
during the Dutch occupation of Taiwan, Fujian farmers began to settle in numbers. The
name Chiayi was given by the Emperor Chien-lung, intended as a reward for Chiayi cit-
izens taking the 'right' side in an 18th-century island-wide rebellion. The city prospered
under Qing and later Japanese rule (when it was the capital of the sugar industry and one
of the most modern cities in Taiwan), but these days, sadly, there is too little of this
prosperity remaining.
