TOP OF CHAPTER
Dasyueshan Forest Recreation Area
At the western edge of the Snow Mountain Range, the Big Snow Mountain Forest
Recreation Area (Dàxuě shān Guójiā Sēnlín Yóulè Qū; admission NT$200; 8am-5pm) rises
from 1000m to just under the gold standard of 3000m. The area was closed at the time of
writing, due to the landslides caused by Typhoon Soulik in 2013. When it is open, expect
some fantastic hiking opportunities and great wildlife viewing, in particular birdwatch-
ing. The climate is humid and cool with an average temperature of 12°C, making it a
popular summer retreat.
Sights & Activities
Forestry Road 200 SCENIC AREA
The 49km-long 200 from Dongshi to the end of the line is an incredible route that offers
the fastest change of landscapes, going from a subtropical forest of fruit orchards,
through a magical mixed zone where cypress and cedar trees stand beside giant tree
palms and ferns, to a pure high-mountain coniferous forest in just 1½ hours.
Hiking
Yuanzui-Shaolai-Xiaoshue National Trail HIKING
(Yuānzuǐ Shāolái Xiǎoxuěshān Guójiā Bùdào) Though the total length of this popular trail is
only 15.5km, it takes two days to complete. You are required to register at the Dadong
police station (at the Km15 mark of the trail) before you hit the road.
Most hikers just do a small portion starting at the Km27 mark. It's about one to 1½
hours uphill on a great path to Yuanzui Shan (elevation 2130m), where an observation
tower gives you views of Yushan.
