In-Depth Information
(Yuèguāng Xiǎo Zhàn) In the hills above Dulan sits a quaint old forestry building
from Japanese times. Nicknamed 'Moonlight Inn', it hosts frequent local arts exhibitions.
Handcrafted items are for sale inside a cafe area that's open till about 6pm.
To get to the inn, follow the English signs off Highway 11. Along the way there's a
stone coffin site that's worth checking out.
Water Running Up NATURAL ODDITY
(Shuǐ Wǎng Shàng Liú) Just south of Dulan is the geological oddity known as Water
Running Up. Can you figure out why it's doing this?
SURFING THE EAST COAST
While the north of Taiwan has had a vibrant surf scene for close to a decade now,
the east coast waves have until very recently been the exclusive domain of a tiny
community of surfers around Donghe, Dulan and Taitung. That's fast changing. In
2011 Taitung's (and Taiwan's) first international surf event was held, and a year
later, the country's biggest surf event, the Taiwan Open of Surfing - ASC Ultima
Event, was held in Jinzun Harbour. The open was held once more in 2013, making it
highly likely this will become a yearly event.
The Taitung surf environment has been given four stars out of six by the ASC.
Prime is the area between Changbin and Donghe, in particular around Chenggong,
Jinzun and the Donghe River mouth. A few surf shops have started to open in
Donghe and Dulan, but it's still very much a DIY scene.
See the Taiwan Open of Surfing ( www.taiwanopenofsurfing.com ) website for
more and contact WaGaLiGong ( Click here ) in Dulan for board rentals.
Sleeping & Eating
Hostels and guesthouses continue to open, and with the strong expat presence in the vil-
lage, there's a growing range of food (there's even a guy at the start of town selling ex-
cellent if pricey handmade bread). In the lane above Water Running Up, look for the
daily fruit market.
