Up the hill from the Catholic Hostel, the airy, expansive
Youth Activity Centre offers far superior private and dorm rooms to the Catholic Hostel.
Expect two-star comfort but a lot of space to hang out, including a cafe-bar with outdoor
seating. Rooms are discounted by 15% midweek and there's a restaurant and laundry fa-
cilities on the premises.

Most likely the first building you'll see upon entering Tienhsiang, the former Grand For-
mosa sports a new name and an updated style: think clean lines, liberal use of wood and
stone, and red-tile floors. In addition to multiple eating and drinking venues, the hotel
boasts a rooftop pool with big views of Taroko Gorge.
Shuttle buses can pick up guests from Hualien Airport or train station. See the hotel's

In the upper level of Bulowan, on a high meadow surrounded by postcard-
perfect scenery, the Leader Village Taroko offers 36 quality wood cabins with old-time
porches to let you relax and take in the views. Endemic butterfly and bird species flit
about year-round, and monkeys, civets and barking deer are often spotted at the edge of
the forest.
Management encourages guests to be quiet here, so don't expect any loud entertain-
ment (except a nightly hour of aboriginal music and dance). Book online for weekday/
low-season discounts.
Taroko Village
In this little village just metres from the park entrance, and 5km from Hsincheng train
station, you'll find a number of inexpensive restaurants and hotels lining the main road.
