Other Sights
There are a number of interesting heritage sights around Hualien, including Pine Garden
MAP GOOGLE MAP (Sōngyuán Biéguǎn; 9am-6pm) , a former WWII command
post for the Japanese Navy. Built in 1943, it was also where kamakazi pilots were wined
and pleasured the night before their final missions. To get here, head up Jung Jeng Rd
and look for the signs on the left at the intersection with Minquan 1st Rd.
Chingszu Temple BUDDHIST TEMPLE
(Jìngsītáng; 703 Jungyang Rd, Sec 3) Chingszu Temple's simple white and grey exterior is
striking. Inside the 10-story modern building, a large exhibition hall showcases the Tzu
Chi Buddhist organisation's activities around the world (see boxed text, Click here ) . Ex-
hibits are in English and Chinese. The temple is a couple of kilometres north of the train
station in a Buddhist complex that includes a hospital and university.
Hualien Railway Cultural Museum HISTORIC BUILDING

(Huālián Tiědào Wénhuà Yuánqū; 71 Jung Shan Rd; 8.30am-5pm Tue-Sun) This mu-
seum covers the grounds of the restored eastern railway depo, built in 1932. Further to-
ward the harbour lies the old machine yard, which was part of a large restoration project
at the time of writing.
Hualien Far Glory Ocean Park PARK
(Huālián hǎiyáng gōngyuán; www.farglory-oceanpark.com.tw ; adult/child NT$890/590;
9am-5pm, to 6.30pm 1 Jul-25 Aug) A large aquarium/amusement park south of Hualien off
Highway 11. Attractions include dolphin shows and a water fun-park. Young kids usually
love this place.
Sleeping
Many travellers also stay at Taroko Village, Liyutan, Qixingtan, or even at one of the
many B&Bs down Highway 11.
