In-Depth Information
(Hǔshān) Getting to the top of craggy Hushan (1492m) is the most difficult of Taian's
hikes. Start on the trail to Shui Yun Waterfall and when the path splits after the suspen-
sion bridge, take the upper route. Pay attention to the ribbons and markers as the route is
not always clear. The return trip takes about five hours.
Sleeping
There are at least a dozen hotels in the area, the fancier ones charging NT$5000 to
NT$8000 a night and the more basic charging NT$2000 to NT$3000 a night.
Tenglong Hot Spring Resort HOTEL $$$

(Ténglóng Wēnquán Shānzhuāng; 941 002; www.teng-long.com.tw ; campsite NT$500, 2-/
4-person cabins NT$3000/4200, weekday discounts 25%) The cabins are basic but have hot-
spring water pumped in, and the resort grounds are nicely cared for and surrounded by
lush forest. Rooms include free use of the nude segregated hot-spring pools (otherwise
per person NT$220). The campground is simple and includes hot showers but can be
very noisy if a big student group is staying.
Tenglong (which looks like a little village as you drive past) is reached by a small side
road and bridge across from the King Spa & Resort. In the summer the resort grounds
swarm with swallowtail butterflies.
Sunrise Hot Spring Hotel HOTEL $$$
$$$
( 941 988; www.hothotel.com.tw ; d from NT$5500, 30% weekday discount) This stylish hot-
spring hotel makes liberal use of wood and stone and Southeast Asian decor in its public
areas. Rooms are a little more staid, but feature large stone tubs (big enough for two
Westerners) with open mountain views. Breakfast is included in the room price, as is free
use of the outdoor hot-spring complex.
Eating
Food is fresh and local, a mix of Hakka and aboriginal fare, and we've never had a bad
meal in many visits. There are numerous small restaurants and shops along the main
road, and also in Qingan Village where everyone seems to have outrageously good
mountain chicken (tǔ jī). Other dishes to look for include shān zhūròu (wild boar) and
Hakka staples such as kejia xiaochao (stir-fried strips of pork, squid, veggies and tofu).
