Municipal Glass Museum

This little museum in a heritage building on the edge of a pleasant wooded park
is dedicated to the local history of glassmaking, which goes back to 1880. The 1st floor
exhibits recent works, while the 2nd highlights the history of glass (in Taiwan and
around the world) and the various techniques used to produce glass art. A taxi here from
downtown costs NT$100.
Confucius Temple
CONFUCIAN TEMPLE
(Kǒng Miào; 8.30am-4.30pm Wed-Sun)
First built in 1810, this is one of Taiwan's most
elegant wooden structures. As with any temple, don't be tempted to rush through: stand
in place and tiny treasures such as stone relief panels, carved plinths, hanging wood-
carvings, soft painted beams and colourful mosaic dragons all begin to appear in rich de-
tail.
To get here simply walk over the hill behind the Municipal Glass Museum.
Activities
At Nanliao Harbour, northwest of the town centre, a long bike-only route winds its way
south through coastal forest and alongside a beautiful stretch of coastline. Consider head-
ing out here for a late afternoon ride and then having dinner.
When you get off the bus, head across the parking lot towards a blue tower both for
the bike rental area and a pleasant enclosed section of harbor with a growing strip of very
good quality eateries. At the time of writing there was a funky stone-oven pizza place
with alfresco seating, an excellent Spanish tapa bar and a live seafood restaurant extend-
ing onto a boat.
To get to the harbour catch bus 15 (NT$15, 30 minutes, every 15 to 30 minutes) out-
side Sogo on Minzu Rd. The last return bus from the harbour is at 6.30pm. After that
time, walk to Dongda Rd (the main road in) and then along that for five minutes to the
bus stop across from a 7-Eleven. The last bus from here is at 9.20pm.
