In-Depth Information
Sleeping & Eating
Before and after hikes you can sleep and eat at Wuling Farm. On the trail there are cabins
at the end of each day's hike with bunk bedding, ecotoilets, water, solar lighting and
sometimes an outside deck. Cabins are unattended, so you must bring your own food
supplies.
Getting There & Away
All hikes begin in the Wuling Farm section of Sheipa National Park. Kuo Kuang Motor
Transport buses leave twice each day from Ilan (NT$337, three hours, 7.30am and
12.40pm) for Wuling Farm. Take the train station back exit and look for the bus stand by
a Hi-Life convenience store. The return bus from Wuling Farm leaves at 9.20am and
2.10pm.
There are also buses to/from Taichung via Lishan. You can also rent scooters in Jiaoxi
and drive up.
HSINCHU & MIAOLI COUNTIES
The Hsinchu Science Park is the most famous site in this region, but most travellers
come for the spectacular mountain scenery in the foothills of the Snow Mountain Range,
the hot springs, and a small mist-shrouded mountain dotted with temples.
Ethnographically, Hsinchu and Miaoli Counties have a heavy concentration of Hakka,
reflected in the food you'll find in many small towns. It's good to familiarise yourself
with some of the staples before heading out. Atayal and Saisiyat aboriginals are also
present in large numbers.
Getting around the area is pretty easy. Trains go up and down the coast all day, and
there is now decent inland bus service with the Tourism Shuttle Bus
( www.taiwantrip.com.tw ) .
