In-Depth Information
coastal landscapes: rolling grass hills, high rugged cliffs, sand beaches, pebble beaches,
rocky terraces and windswept peninsulas.
Most of the area falls under the auspices of either the North Coast & Guanyinshan
Scenic Administration ( www.northguan-nsa.gov.tw ; 9am-5pm) at Baishawan Beach or
the Northeast & Yilan Coast Scenic Administration ( www.necoast-nsa.gov.tw ;
9am-6pm) , which is headquartered in Fulong. You'll find travel information centres at
both offices.
Getting There & Around
There are public buses to most places in the region. Between Tamsui and Keelung the
brilliant Tourism Shuttle Bus ( www.taiwantrip.com.tw ; one-day pass NT$100) runs
hourly on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends to the main sites, including the
previously difficult to reach Juming Museum. The last buses leave/return around 5pm or
6pm.
Another shuttle bus line connects Juifen with Fulong Beach.
The highway is popular with cyclists, as are the side roads around Sanzhi, Fulong and
Daxi.
TOP OF CHAPTER
Baishawan Beach
One of the better beaches in New Taipei City (this is not meant to be particularly high
praise) is found at this little bay (Báishāwān), the name of which translates as 'white-
sand bay' - though these days it is definitely more of a brownish colour. The entrance to
the beach is down a side road 100m or so off Hwy 2 (there are brown signs in English
around the 23km mark). Swimming is permitted from May to September, as is surfing.
For surfboard rentals and lessons, visit CU Surf Paradise Taiwan (Táiwān xīyuán
chōnglàng xīn lèyuán; www.facebook.com/cu.surf.taiwan ) on the main road where the bus drops
you off.
Baishawan is formed by the stubby finger of rocky Linshanbi Cape (Línshānbí) ex-
tending into the Taiwan Strait. This is a scenic part of the north coast and a several-
kilometres-long boardwalk runs along the shoreline as part of a 10km bike path from
Sanzhi to Shimen.
