CAR
An international driver's licence is required to rent a car. For English-speaking staff try
VIP Car Rental ( 2713-1111; www.vipcar.com.tw ; per day from NT$1800) , which has about the
lowest rates around. Also good are Easy Rent ( Click here ) and Car Plus ( Click here ) .
SUBWAY (MRT)
Clean and safe, MRT trains run from 6am until midnight. Most places in the city centre
are within a 20-minute walk of a station. Announcements and signs are in Chinese and
English, as are fares and routes at ticket machines. Coins and bills are accepted and
change is provided, though it's best to buy day passes or an EasyCard. All stations have
clean public toilets which you can use even if you are not riding the MRT (just ask the
booth attendant to let you in).
TAXI
The base fare is NT$70 for the first 1.25km plus NT$5 for each 250m thereafter. From
11pm to 6am there is a surcharge of NT$20 on top of the fare. Two days prior to the
Chinese New Year's Eve until the end of the holidays, the nighttime rate applies to all
rides plus an extra NT$20. For nighttime travel during Chinese New Year holidays, there
is an extra NT$40 charge.
AROUND TAIPEI
Taipei's MRT has made once out-of-the way places a mere 30-minute ride away, which
has not led them to becoming tourist traps, but to a rediscovery of their heritage. Any trip
to Taipei more than a day long should make time for a visit out of town.
