This
green, expansive activity centre has simple but great value private accommodation: the
rooms for four to six people are perfect for families, and the 10th-floor twins have beau-
tiful views over the city and mountains. Dorm rooms (YHA card required) are a bit
pricey but then they are really twin rooms with private baths.
The location of the centre is stellar: Jiantan Mountain (for hiking) is just across the
road, the riverside bike paths run past the back of the hostel, Shilin Night Market is five
minutes away, buses leave from Jiantan MRT to Yangmingshan, and the bus to the Na-
tional Palace Museum leaves from Shilin, one MRT station up. For dorm rooms be sure
to book ahead.

Just a short walk from historic
Dihua St is this sweet little 2nd-floor hostel kitted out with furnishings and knick-knacks
from the 1950s and '60s. There are only nine beds, including the popular if tight Harry
Potter room (the cupboard under the staircase), and you have use of the kitchen, laundry
and a cosy living area.
Alex, your host, grew up in the area and is a wealth of information on the history,

Billed as the city government's first hostel, CU is actually just a few dorm
rooms inside a spiffy new midrange hotel sitting above the newly refurbished Shuanglien
Market. It's a nice place, don't get us wrong, and at just 50m from Ningxia Night Market
and close to historic Dihua St, it's well located.
Hostel rooms fit two to four people, and are windowless but clean and tidy. NT$150
gets you a buffet breakfast.
